How to modify your path

At times you will need to add an executable to your system path so that you can run it from any directory. To do this:

  1. Open a terminal window by going to Applications > Accessories > Terminal.
  2. In the Terminal Window, navigate (cd) to the /etc directory, then enter:
    sudo gedit environment

After entering your password, the environment file opens in a text editor.

  3. Add whatever paths you need to the PATH environment variable. Make sure each entry is separated by colons.
  4. Click Save to save the file.
